Sq Ft / Sq M + Ideal Vastu Ratio Check

Is your room feeling heavy, restless, or off-balance even after perfect Vastu direction? The reason is often the size and proportion.

In Vastu Shastra, every room has a specific energy function. If the dimensions are wrong – too small, too narrow, or in an inauspicious ratio – energy flow (Prana) gets blocked. This simple guide gives you the exact ideal square footage for every room and the secret Vastu ratio formula used by Sthapatis.

Use our free Room Size Vastu Calculator above to instantly check your room in Sq Ft, Sq M, and its Vastu ratio compliance.

Why Room Size Matters in Vastu?

Vastu is not just about direction. It’s about Aayadi – The 6 Mathematical Formulas that decide if a structure is auspicious.

  1. Energy Balance: A rectangular room with a 1:1.5 to 1:2 ratio allows smooth circulation of air, light and energy. A long, tunnel-like room (1:3) creates anxiety and conflict.
  2. Aayadi Shastra: Ancient texts say length and width must be in harmony. Both dimensions should be either even-even (e.g., 10′ x 12′) or odd-odd (e.g., 11′ x 15′). Mixed even-odd is considered inauspicious.
  3. Functionality: A master bedroom below 120 sq ft feels cramped and leads to poor sleep as per Vastu, while an oversized puja room loses its sanctity.

The Golden Vastu Ratio for Any Room

The most important Vastu rule for size is:

Ideal Ratio = 1 : 1.5 to 1 : 2 (Width : Length)

This means if your room width is 10 feet, its length should be between 15 feet (10 x 1.5) and 20 feet (10 x 2).

Other Golden Rules:

  • Shape: Square (1:1) and rectangle (1:1.5) are best. Avoid circular, triangular or irregular shapes.
  • Even-Even / Odd-Odd Rule: As per Vishwakarma Prakash, keep both length and width either even or odd. Example: 12′ x 16′ (even-even) is good. 10′ x 13′ (even-odd) should be avoided.
  • Aayadi Remedy: If your dimensions are slightly off, you can keep the usable area correct by adjusting wall thickness or using wooden paneling.

How to Calculate Room Square Footage (with Formula)

Step 1: Measure Length and Width in Feet
Use a measuring tape from wall to wall.

Step 2: Apply Formula
Square Footage = Length x Width

Example: If your room is 12 ft long and 15 ft wide,
Sq Ft = 12 x 15 = 180 sq ft.

Step 3: Convert to Square Meter
Sq Meter = Sq Ft ÷ 10.764
So, 180 sq ft = 16.72 sq m.

Step 4: Check Vastu Ratio
Ratio = Length ÷ Width
If Ratio is between 1.5 and 2.0, it is excellent. If it is 1 to 1.2, it is also good (Square shape).

Our calculator above does all 4 steps automatically.

What If Your Room Size Is Wrong As Per Vastu? (Upay)

Don’t break walls immediately. Vastu allows for corrections:

  1. For Long Narrow Rooms (Ratio > 2): Place a heavy almirah, divider, or curtain partition to visually break it into two balanced zones.
  2. For Even-Odd Dosha: Use skirting, false ceiling or border tiles to correct the effective dimension by 3-6 inches to make it even-even or odd-odd.
  3. For Too Small Rooms: Use light colors (off-white, light yellow), large mirrors on North/East wall, and keep it clutter-free to amplify energy.
  4. For Too Large Rooms: Vastu says very large, empty rooms create loneliness. Zone it with rugs, plants and warm lighting.

Q3. What is the minimum master bedroom size as per Vastu?

Minimum 120 sq ft (10′ x 12′), but ideal is 180-250 sq ft (12′ x 15′ to 14′ x 18′) for proper energy circulation and SW stability.
